This is an ink drawing: A small, old-fashioned church stands alone in a field. A tall, narrow bell tower rises above the entrance, topped by a steep, pointed roof and a small cross. The tower has two arched windows near the top; one on the front of and one on the right side. The left side of the tower is out of view. A circular impression is at the middle of the tower, imprinted in the stone. The entrance features a tall, arched door with four tall, narrow windows on either side. The main building has a sloping roof, horizontal siding, and three windows with pointed Gothic-style arches. Short tufts of grass grow around the church's foundation, with scattered clumps of longer grass across the foreground. Clouds stretch across the sky behind the church. Several small birds fly among them.

The Preacher Man was an Ad Man

“It’s up ahead—”

I glance at my fiancée, then back at the road.

“What is?”

“That church I was telling you about before we left for the cottage. The one with the sign.”

She looks up from her phone. “Sign?”

“Yeah, I drove by it all the time when I worked at the outfitters. Highlight of my commute.”

“Oh. Right…”

We round a corner and the church comes into view. I ease off the gas and turn the radio down.

She tilts her head. “Can’t read with the music on?”

I laugh and point to the sign:

STAY OUT OF DEBT
ACT YOUR WAGE

“Good advice,” she admits, “but it has nothing to do with religion or faith.”

“That’s the point. It’s not what you expect, so it sticks out.

The church drifts into the rearview mirror. “I mean, how many other church signs have you heard me talk about?”

My fiancée reaches over and gives my leg a squeeze. “I wonder what it’ll say on our way home…”

I turn the radio back up and drive on.

The image is a close up of three pencils. The pencils are laying flat with the tips angled towards each other. Each tip is broken, with bits of lead strewn about the ends of the pencils. The image suggests a writer or artist is trying to master their craft, taking multiple attempts to get a particular piece of writing or artwork right.
