This is a detailed black-and-white pen drawing of an ornate hourglass. The hourglass has a thick, rounded top and bottom connected by two bulbous columns. Inside, a steady stream of sand twists down through the narrow neck into the lower chamber. The piling sand forms the shape of a human skull. The skull appears weathered and partially eroded rather than anatomically correct. It has large, hollow eye sockets, a dark triangular nasal cavity, and several pointed teeth. Shadows make it seem as if the eyeless skull is still looking at you. Less than half of the sand remains in the upper chamber, while the skull in the lower chamber is nearly complete. Small leaves drift down and around the hourglass. The drawing is a visual metaphor, suggesting the passage of time and the inevitability of death.
